Making a life, not a living

by Jon Katz

April 1, 2008 – I appreciate Fred DePaul, the shearer, for many reasons. His skill, generosity, courtesy, humility, stories. But I was reminded of why I appreciate him so much when I got an e-mail from Lory Peck this morning scolding me for saying the sun rises in the same place every morning (you have to love the Net: Lory reminds me the sun rises in a different place every morning, due east at the equinoxes, each day rising and setting a little forther north as Spring progresses to the solstice, and then reversing. No wonder each sunrise looks different – it is!).
At the end of her e-mail, there was a sign that made me think of Fred: “Of course, one must go on ‘making a living,’ somehow – but the essential thing is to make a life.” Fred has made a life, and reminds me to do the same. Thanks, Lory.
