Fool in the woods, a true parable

by Jon Katz

How did this happen, the fool wondered?

April 11, 2008 – There’s a fool in the woods. When it rains, he used to go inside and stay dry. Now he grabs his expensive new camera, waits for sunrise, and attaches a heavy lens and takes his dogs and goes out into the woods and gets cold and wet and takes pictures of raindrops, who he now believes talk to him, and he talks back, saying things like, “hey, hold still,” and “why did you choose that twig and leaf and why haven’t you fallen to the ground?” Sometimes, the fool imagines that the raindrops are talking to him, saying things like, “yo, wassup? We will only be here for an hour or so and then will be gone, but if you look at us, we have a message for you.”
The fool stared at the drop in the rain and took photos of it, and for this he was rewarded with a message, which sounded suspiciously like my daughter Emma: “Yes, yes, we know. God is everywhere. You can take a good picture of anything. Get inside. Be dry. Change the aperture.”
