November 1, 2007 – Cold, windy. I was settling in after dinner today in my cabin in Merck forest where I was camping. Lenore was sleeping in my lap, and I had just stoked the fire and was watching a glorious sunset when I was surprised to hear my friends Bill and Maria Heinrich call my name. I sensed something was wrong, as it wasn’t a time they would normally have come, and they had come a ways to find me.
They came to tell me that my friend Anthony Armstrong had called to tell them that his sister Felicia had been found dead, murdered, according to the police. He asked if they would find me and let me know, so that I could come off the mountain and find him. I did, and was grateful for the gift of being asked.
Bill and Maria helped me pack up in minutes and we rushed out of the green Vermont hills.
My heart and love go out to Anthony and his wife Holly and his family, Doug, Michelle and Charlie. Felicia had a difficult life with many struggles and she is, hopefully, in a peaceful place.
Anthony has weathered a lot in the past year or so, and he will weather this as well. He is an extraordinary human being, loving, talented and brave. I hold him and his family in the light, humbled one more time by life and its awful beauty and power. And by our own insignificance. Yo, Anthony, hang in there. You are much loved.
You have many friends, thinking of you, and waiting to help in any way you need.
There is, in fact, nothing more insecure than the transient world.
