September 10, 2007 – Back from Wellfleet, Mass., a beautiful alternative kind of place where Paula and Emma and I have gathered every August or September for much of our lives. Much of the Cape is overrun, and the geographic and high-density opposite of the farm, some of it is still eerily beautiful. I took this picture of a ghost tree on the marsh, long ago killed by erosion and standing as an eerie reminder of the National Seashore’s largely untended but daunting problems. It was nice to be there, wonderful to be with my family, and good to get back to the farm which – miracle! – got some rain.
Tommorrow, a scramble to get ready for winter. More hay, more water issues, life goes on. Good news – I don’t have to go anywhere for months.
