Moby Dick’s – Washington County Fair

by Jon Katz

August 23, 2007 – Cloudy, cool. Izzy and I went to Albany for WAMC’s Dog Talk today. Good to see Joe Donahue again. Going back to the county fair tonight with Izzy to visit the hospice booth. People don’t really go to county fairs to talk about hospice, but it’s definitely worth going. I’ve learned working with this amazing group that death ought not to be a taboo, and the dying often suffer from the public’s avoidance of their reality.
County fairs are amazing places, uniquely American. They are many things, but a fascinating study of how Americans eat. Everything is fried, even vegetables, and people eat corn dogs, funnel cakes, fried dough by the pound. Moby Dick’s was the only fish stand, and it stood out. I loved the light and fiddled with a lens to make it a bit bluer. Fair closes Saturday and I and my Canon will miss it. Fairs are pure reflections of American life, and one of the few places I’ve been where kids have a happy role to play in a public event.
