Screening for life. Rocky and Me

Screening for life

Rocky is my new pal. I’ll go hang out with him later in the day. America is a fascinating place for people seeking something other than bad news, political argument and medications. Those things are plentiful, peace of mind and perspective can be difficult to find.

My glasses broke yesterday and I’m wearing an old pair, stumbling around. For someone who sits at a computer, and takes photos and video, this needs resolution. I don’t like my glasses much, so I found an optometrist in nearby Glens Falls and called up. Well, they said, welcome. We offer the most comprehensive eye screening in the region. We test for cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, glaucoma and vitamin deficiency.

I paused. What about eyesight?

Well of course, said the receptionist. We check for that too.

What about just for eyesight? Well, she said. Nobody has asked that. I’ll have to check with the doctor.

Do you screen for peace of mind? Happiness? Fulfillment? She laughed. You’re funny, she said.

I am a bit ridiculous. I told her I was on the way in. I wanted new glasses, and did not want to be screened for cancer, heart disease, or high blood pressure. She said she couldn’t promise me anything. I’ll keep you posted.
