After I was divorced, and alone, I went to the supermarket and I bought some fruit for Maria, who I had begun seeing. The cashier raised her eyebrow and asked me who the Asian Pear was for. My girlfriend, I said. Great, she said, remember that’s the little things. Don’t forget to think of the little things and she will love you.
Sometimes I think of the important things in life as being the little things. A lot of little things add up to a lot of big things. Today I was in that same supermarket and I brought Maria a bunch of Gerber daisies. She couldn’t have been happier if I had given her a diamond necklace. In fact, she would hate a diamond necklace. And the Gerber Daisy also gave me a beautiful thing to remember as I think about the importance of little things. Back from Woodstock, putting together a Bedlam Farm Diary about the Writers Festival for Monday.
