The Sketch Potholders: Gallery 99

by Jon Katz
Art and fiber

My former girlfriend is fusing two different forms of art – sketching and fiberworks – to make her new Sketch Potholders, selling for $22 apiece and debuting this weekend at Gallery 99 in Glens Falls.  I think Maria has really stretched the envelope with these artistic potholders, but I am biased, I think.

I brought my photos – three framed photos, two in Glens Falls, for $90, 12 8 x10’s, matted, for $60 apiece and 15 packs of notecards, $15 for five.  Nice to see them hanging up, and they will never be cheaper than that.

Sometimes when you get involved in a public event, you keep your expectations low. Things often don’t turn out as expected. This event is already well beyond my expectations. Amazing amount of quality art at shockingly low prices. This is an art show where everyone can leave happy. Everyone will be able to afford something and it’s good stuff. Plus great music, demonstrations, food. The reception is tomorrow evening. I’m helping to pour wine.

There is a lot of stuff I’d love to buy, but artists have to wait until the public gets a crack at it, and I think this art will move quickly. I’m speaking at 6 p.m. Friday on “Creativity and Change.” Diane Swanson and the people from Art In The Public Eye have done something quite radical and creative here – pulled together a community of committed and gifted artists looking to explore new ways of reconnecting people with the art they love and deserve. Pretty amazing, in my experience. Details here.
