I got this sign shortly after I moved to the farm, and Rose and I were crossing the road with sheep several times a day, before I even had fences. Rose would push the sheep across the meadow and keep them together while they grazed in the meadow and off into the woods. People drove down the road quickly, and Rose was struck by cars more than once, as I learned that no sign would cause some people to slow down.
We don’t cross sheep much anymore, especially in the winter, and there are no sheep right now. And the farm has good and strong fences throughout. Like many things, the sign reminds me of a different time on the farm, a thrilling, mad and exhilarating time when Rose and I were scrambling to get things under control. Thanks to her, we did, sort of.
