The grass is useless now, in terms of nutrition. The donkeys are on baled hay, a half bale a day between the two of them. And on cold nights, a cup of grain each for extra energy. I got a box of apple wafers today at Agway, and some horse feed. The donkeys are slimming down a bit, which is good. I try to feed them at mid-day and grain them in the evening if it’s below freezing. They go in the barn only when it is windy with freezing rain. It is satisfying to feed them, nourishing for them, for me. I am always conscious of them, and never eat dinner until all the animals have been fed, an old farmer’s rule.
