I never imagined having four dogs. It’s too many, really. I think two is optimal, three at most for me. But Frieda has been a wonderful addition to my canine life. She has challenged and expanded my ideas about training, taught me much about how dogs think, and become the defender of the farm, a vigilant presence that makes us feel safe. And we are. Nothing will get past Frieda. She has a big heart, it turns out, and we have a love thing going. I don’t think I will bring “Little Girl” home from the Rouse farm. Sometimes you love something best by saying no.
