Fair Day, (two). Fried vegetables

by Jon Katz
Opening day

Around here, life is suspended during Fairy Week. This morning I’m going to the Rouse farm to see them ship their cows off to the Fair for judging Thursday. I’m bringing Michelle some notecards as they still haven’t seen the website, read any of my books, or quite grasped who I am. They couldn’t be nicer or more welcoming though, an instinct among family farm people. You always feel at home in the kitchen, whether you are or not. And they are already getting over a bit of shyness and razzing me about my city ways. Ed has a great sense of humor, and Michelle is viscerally loving.

Tonight, going to the fair to see one of Maria’s co-workers in the demolition derby. That should be wild. And a fair worker told me there was some healthy food being offered this year: fried vegetables.
