Although we love to make them complex, my life with animals suggests they are simple, elemental. Animals are about food and attention. Their lives depend on others giving them food (at least farm animals) and they pay close attention to the people who provide. Lulu was always a bit skittish, less trusting than Fanny. Maria has worked every day to connect with her, and I love seeing the photos of their relationship evolve.

When Maria appears in the pasture, Lulu brays and comes running. She presents herself for food, carrots, scratching and ear rubbing. I can see the bond forming.
