A famous animal photographer told me a few years ago that if I wanted to take good animal photos, I had to go for the eyes. He was correct. A donkey is a fascinating animal, a spiritual creature. Somewhere between a pet and guard and farm animal. They are devoted to people, protective of sheep and the farm, and almost shockingly intuitive and intelligent. Lulu is especially loving and connected to Maria and I. I think I caught some of this emotion today. A donkey isn’t quite a pet, and has little real use on contemporary farms. Yet they help ground us, and open up strange channels of love.
