I think Maria is one of those animal communicators. When we found Bartleby, he was alone in the Pole Barn and his mother was running around the pasture, as the donkeys were trying to run the two of them off, as they do all intruders. Rose got the ewe into the training pen, but she was butting and kicking Bartleby. Maria held her head and talked her while Bartleby nursed, and she began to calm down, and the began to bond.

Maria, needless to say, is a happy girl today.
