New Bedlam Farm

by Jon Katz

July 26, 2009 – I’m unable to upload photos to the blog for the moment, in a way, that’s fitting, as I can return to words and their impact on me. The sheep and the donkeys have left Bedlam Farm, going together to a good farm in Vermont with people who love and will care for them.
It is a sad day for me, but that is a personal experience, not one I can or really want to share. In recent years, the farm, wonderful as it is, became something other than I had intended, and while it served me well in my books and life, it is time to move on, to a simpler, more creative and more manageable life.
Some people find the rehoming of animals traumatic, even unconscionable. I do not, as long as they are going to good places, carefully chosen. Animals are highly adaptable creatures, and mine will be loved. Rose is enjoying frisbee, ball chasing and ATV rides and is happy and busy I never was a shepherd or sheepherder at heart.
My dogs are here to stay, and coming along as we think of a New Bedlam Farm, and what ought to be there. I see dogs, barn cats, and a few chickens. And I see the opportunity to focus more seriously on my work, and lead the simpler, more coherent life I seek. “Bedlam” farm got its name for a reason. The farm is beautiful, the barns restored, the views and space wonderful. But there is little bedlam here now, and that is the direction I choose to seek. As soon as I can, I’ll post photos from today.
