Bleak is good

by Jon Katz

February 21, 2009 – Around here, they call this the Widow Saunders tree, but nobody remembes why a tree would be named after a widow, or what might have happened there. The tree stands out, by itself in a big pasture, and always seems lonely to me, even, bleak, but that is in the eye of the beholder. I was with a friend at a Japanese restaurant in Glens Falls, N.Y., last night, and I showed the waitress this photo, and I asked her if she thought it was bleak. “Bleak is good,” she said.
A major storm is predicted for today – Sunday, and the dogs, camera and I will be  here. I’ll try to write in the morning, and, satellite permitting (you can hardly even see the satellite any more, it’s so buried in snow, I’ll get some photos up.
