Drops on a leaf (1)

by Jon Katz

May 4, 2008 – I had this itch when I went out into the woods with Paula and the dogs this morning, and I thought I was going to try something different, so I brought the 180mm and a Tripod, and the 65 mm tube extender and, looking through the viewfinder with my favorite lens, I saw these drops resting on a leaf after the rain had stopped. So I spent an hour fiddling with the range, and the Tripod and adjusting to the complex focusing, and I got this shot, which I loved. I don’t want to put too fine a point on it, but this is another example of seeing things more closely, and seeing the beauty in everyday things more clearly.
I loved this view of drops, which seemed luminous to me, and I could catch that feeling, I thought, if I got lower and got the daylight coming from behind the drops. Very odd angle, but angles matter.
Lisa Leeper wrote a beautiful note last week suggesting that God was whispering to me, an idea I love. Today, I was thinking more along the lines of once being blind, but now am beginning to see. Same thing, maybe. Photography is a great gift to me.
