March 17, 2008 – Took Rose out herding today, a fitting thing, I suppose for St. Patrick’s Day, and always a beautiful thing. Every year, after winter, there is always a ewe or two who challenges Rose, and forgets about last year. This year it’s Number 57, one of my oldest and favorite sheep, and she kept lowering her head and refusing to move. “This can only end one way,” I called to her, and in a few minutes, she was moving with the flock. It always amazes me that this small dog is intimidated by nothing (exept Elvis) and has so much authority. She simply will never back down or quit until the job is done. That’s the soul of Rose.
