The kids playing

by Jon Katz

February 28, 2008 – Temperature is -12 right now, and tonight I wouldn’t wish to be a sheep or steer.

It might look from the photo that Rose is murdering Lenore, but the truth is the two have really bonded in the last couple of weeks. Lenore, through her geniality and persistence, has actually gotten Rose to lighten up, leave her work behind for a few minutes, and play. The two tear through the woods, up and down hills, and knock each other down. Last week, Lenore snuck up on Rose and knocked her on her butt. Since then, Rose has been alert, taking the heavier and more powerful Lenore down and dragging her around by the collar, stealing her toys and bones and teasing her.
Lenore could not possibly be having a better time, unless she managed to get behind a donkey for awhile. She follows Rose around like a little sister, challenging her to play, and tearing around with abandon. I’m not sure I’ve actually ever seen Rose having fun, so this may be good for her. Lenore is surely having a good time, but then she is one of those girls that has fun anywhere. Lenore is the light.
