Lenore and Cheyanne

Cheyanne is a gifted writer, illustrator and musician. She is writing a story about the struggle a musician might have have to share his or her culture in a small town. From the first draft she e-mailed me last night, I’d say this will be a powerful story:
“The day passed at an agonizing pace, mindlessly doing classwork within the drowned out voices among her. She inhaled, took a deep breath, replaying a recently  heard song in her mind, tapping out the rythym with her pen and right heel. She reopened her eyes, humming quietly to herself as she sketched idly on the bottom corner of the math homework. She suddenly felt eyes upon her.”

Jen: “My Journey to Independence,” is the title of her story.
“My journey to independence started very abruptly on August 21, 2006. I got up the courage to tell someone what had been bothering me and ruining my childish spirit for so many years.” For the next three days, she writes, she adjust to her new independence in a group home for teenage girls. Real stories from the real world.
