Brutus in the storm – Ice Storm/12

by Jon Katz

February 1, 2008 – Turned out to be an awesome idea to sit out part of the ice storm with the sheep and the donkeys in the pole barn. Brutus, above, snatched my diabetic snack bar out of my hand and ate it, and I tapped him on the head with my walking stick, not that he noticed or cared.
I holed up in a car of the pole barn for about 45 minutes, wisely, for once, choosing a wide angle lens. It was smelly, muddy, cold, and the ground was wet. But it was warm, and sheltered from the pelting ice and rain. I almost took a nap up there, but the donkeys, especially Jesus and Lulu, seemed delighted to have me up there and coming over to nuzzle me, ruining my shots. Lulu is a loving spirit and she keeps a close eye on me, always coming around, always appreciating my visits. The animal’s perspective is quiet, one of acceptance, waiting, the ice storm just another small thing that will pass.
