Elvis in a bit of trouble

by Jon Katz

January 17, 2008 – Very cold, cloudy. Elvis is in a bit of trouble, I’m afraid. His rear leg joints are quite swollen. God help us if he needs a shot – I think that would have to be me, as last time he almost pulled down the barn –  although he enthusiastically accepted some Clementines from me this morning. Vet says it might be arthritis, or some other joint condition. At 3,000 pounds, joints are not a simple issue for a steer, and his life could be dramatically shortened by a condition like that. Most steers don’t live that long, and that’s a lot of wear and tear. Wish us luck. More vets coming next week. I love the monster, and hope he’s okay. Very sweet creature and nobody slobbers on your head like Elvis does. He is a true contemplative.
A farmer I know says I might have to put a heating pad on him. Might up the insurance for that.
