Sweet moment on the farm. 6.a.m. Walk the dogs in the woods. Go to the sheep meadow, check fences and fill the water tub. Rose marches the sheep around. Put the dogs in the yard, cept for Izzy. Go to the big barn. I am a popular guy at this time. The cats are waiting for me, circling my feet. Many sounds – meowing, braying, clucking. The donkeys and chickens gather. The cows bellow on the other side of the barn door. I put whole corn kernels in the donkey’s buckets, spread some for Winston and chickens, give the cats a small can of food each, give the cows apples and Elvis his donut. Izzy lies down near me (see this for yourself on the Live from Bedlam video stream). I fill the water tubs. All the animals settle in for their morning snack, and the sound of chewing, crunching, pecking and munching are satisfying and peaceful. One of my favorite times of day. I love the simplicity of these creatures. A farmer with buckets of stuff is a loved human. Feed them and they will love you completely and forever. When all is said and done, it is nice to be loved, a gift.
